“The whole process from audition to show week is full of fun and laughter.”

Can I be a member?

To be a member you must be between the ages of 8 and 18 years old when our annual show is performed in the February half-term break.

You don't need any experience acting, singing or dancing to join us.

You don't need to live in Halifax, although you do need to be able to travel to Halifax for weekly rehearsals.

“The days I would go to rehearsals for Juniors were the best days of the week! Not only did being a member create such a huge love for the theatre that made me realise that was all I wanted to do with my life, I also made some wonderful friendships.

What would I do?

The biggest thing we do each year is our annual musical production in the February half-term holidays, with up to six performances in a town-centre theatre.

The rest of the year we have rehearsals for this production, along with skills workshops covering activities such as stage make-up, singing technique and stage combat. We also stage occasional concerts to let new voices and singing styles take the front row.

Alongside all this you get valuable experience if you're thinking about a performing arts career, as well as support from our talented team of friendly faces including stage and screen professionals.

How do I join?

Each year we hold a pre-show launch event before the start of the school year. We'll tell you all the details of our next show, you'll have a chance to meet the production team, and you'll be able to ask any questions you have. Follow us on Twitter or Facebook to be one of the first to hear about our launch events, or email us to ask for more details.

If you do come to the launch and want to take the next step, it's easy. To start with you'll need to come along to our audition workshop (don't worry - you don't have to audition for a part if you don't want to!). If you decide you want to join the society then you'll need to agree to our rules, get a parent or guardian to fill in some paperwork, pay the membership fee, and that's it!

If you want a named part in one of our shows then you'll also need to audition, but this is always as relaxed as we can make it, and everybody is able to join in our shows as part of the chorus even if they don't get a named part.

Email us at [email protected] to ask about joining

What if I just want to come to a workshop?

All our workshops can be attended by anyone aged between 8 and 18, even if you're not a member. Just get in touch with us using the details on the workshop advert and we'd love to see you!

What if I don't want to be on stage?

If being on stage isn't your thing, you might be able to help out as part of our backstage team! You'll need to be over the age of 16, but we're always looking for people to help with props, costumes, scenery, front of house, lighting, sound and more.

During my time with HLOS Juniors I have built sets, made props, run microphones, inflated basketballs, hung lights, crawled under stages, sewed costumes and had the best time. As a Junior I had the opportunity to learn and work backstage on the shows, helping me develop in skills and confidence. They gave me responsibilities and independence, whilst also being a safe learning environment. I loved my time as a Junior and am so grateful for it, everything I learnt with them, and the people who taught me.”
